Well-supported: blocking light protects your sleep

This is the foundation, and it's the one that holds up.

Light is the primary signal your circadian system uses to decide whether it's day or night. Light exposure at night suppresses melatonin, and light during the sleep period is associated with disrupted sleep architecture. That's not contested. A mask blocks light. Where you can't achieve a dark room — a partner reading, a streetlamp, summer sunrise at 4:40am, a hotel with bad curtains — a mask is the most direct way to get darkness on your eyes.

Well-supported: less friction on the skin around your eyes

This is a materials claim rather than a sleep claim, and it's the one where fabric genuinely matters.

Over eight hours, your face is pressed against fabric and moves against it every time you shift. Smoother fabric drags less. The skin around the eyes is the thinnest on the body, so it's where repeated overnight creasing shows up first. Silk is measurably smoother against skin than cotton or polyester, which is why dermatologists have recommended silk pillowcases on the same reasoning for years.

What we won't claim: that a silk mask prevents wrinkles. Reduced friction is a real mechanism. "Prevents ageing" is a marketing leap, and the studies aren't there to support it.

Well-supported: it makes bad sleep environments workable

Flights, hotels, hospitals, night shifts, shared rooms, summer mornings. This isn't really a scientific claim — it's a practical one, and it's the reason most people who own a mask actually own one. A mask is the only light-blocking solution you can pack in a pocket and use anywhere.

Plausible: the daytime cognitive benefit

Here's where we're going to be more careful than most articles, because this is the study everyone cites and almost nobody caveats.

In 2023, Greco and colleagues at Cardiff University published a paper in the journal Sleep titled "Wearing an eye mask during overnight sleep improves episodic learning and alertness." Participants aged 18–35 wore an eye mask for a week and were tested against a control condition. The researchers reported better episodic memory encoding and improved alertness with the mask, and in a second experiment found the memory benefit was predicted by time spent in slow-wave sleep.

It's a well-designed study and it's the strongest single piece of evidence for a next-day benefit from mask use.

However. Later in 2023, the same journal published a reanalysis of that data by other researchers, titled "No clear or consistent evidence that wearing an eye mask leads to meaningful improvement in learning and alertness." The reanalysis was possible because the original authors shared their data publicly, which is to their credit.

We are not in a position to adjudicate between them, and we're not going to pretend otherwise. What we can say is that if you see a sleep mask brand citing the 2023 Cardiff study as settled proof that masks make you smarter, they either haven't read the follow-up or are choosing not to mention it.

Our honest position: plausible, actively debated, not proven.

Plausible: temperature and night sweats

Silk is breathable and doesn't trap heat the way polyester or foam does. For anyone dealing with night sweats — including during perimenopause and menopause — a mask that adds thermal load is a mask you'll take off at 3am.

This is a comparative claim rather than a therapeutic one. Silk doesn't cool you down. It just doesn't heat you up, which polyester and foam masks reliably do. That difference is real and it's the difference between wearing a mask all night and abandoning it.

Plausible: it becomes a sleep cue

The idea that putting on a mask signals "sleep now" to your brain is consistent with everything we know about behavioural conditioning and sleep hygiene. It's also basically unfalsifiable as a specific claim about masks.

Our take: it's likely real and it's a small effect. If you already have a wind-down routine, adding a mask to it probably reinforces it. If you don't, a mask alone isn't going to build one.

Overstated: hair protection

You'll see masks sold on hair benefits. The reasoning is that a silk strap creates less friction along the hairline than a thin elastic one.

That's probably true, but a strap sits across a small area of your head for eight hours. The effect on your hair overall is minor. A silk pillowcase does far more for your hair than a silk mask does. We'd rather tell you that than sell you a mask on a benefit it barely delivers.

Overstated: anything about detox, lymphatic drainage, or eye health

If you see these claims attached to a sleep mask, they're not supported. A mask blocks light and reduces friction. Those are the mechanisms. Everything else is either downstream of better sleep in general, or invented.

What actually makes the difference between masks

Given that light-blocking is the core benefit, the question becomes: which masks actually block light?

Density is what does it. A thin mask lets light through the fabric itself, which is why a lot of budget "silk" masks feel lovely and still leave you looking at a grey glow. Fit is the second factor. Most light leaks in at the nose gap, not through the fabric. An adjustable strap and a shape that sits properly against the bridge of the nose matter more than most product pages suggest.
